Spicy Grilled Cheese

Kids of all ages love grilled cheese sandwiches for lunch. Akhil, from North York, thinks kids will like this recipe because of the mix of cheese and seasonings like cilantro and cayenne. Try serving it with a tangy bean salad for lunch.

Preparation Time: 20 minutes

Cooking Time: 5 minutes

Makes: 2 servings

Tips

  1. Use your favourite cheese to make it your own.
  2. Try different peppers to change the flavour. For a spicier sandwich, try using jalapeno peppers.

Ingredients

Red bell pepper, finely chopped                      

 Half

Green onions, thinly sliced

Chopped fresh cilantro                                  

1 Tbsp (15 mL) 

Chili powder                                                  

1 tsp (5 mL)   

Cayenne powder                                           

Pinch 

Whole grain bread

Light Swiss cheese slices                                

 2 (80 g)

Canola oil                                                                                  

1 1/2 tsp (7 mL)

Directions

  1. 1. In a small bowl, stir together pepper, onions, cilantro, chili powder and cayenne pepper. Spread evenly on 2 bread slices. 
  2. Top with cheese and cover with remaining bread slices. Brush one side with some of the oil.
  3. Place sandwiches in large nonstick skillet, oiled side down and cook over medium heat for about 3 minutes or until golden.
  4. Flip sandwich over and cook for about 3 minutes or until golden and cheese is melted.
